American Flags Across the USA by Bike--inspired by the 2013 American Icon Art Competition

American Flags Across the USA by Bike is a summer 2013 project inspired by the Sausalito Art Festival's 2013 American Icon Art Competition. Some of the photos may be entered into the competition, but the initial motivation is to capture images of the American Flag--an American Icon-- during a bike ride across the USA. Learn more about the 2013 American Icon Art Competition and how you can enter your work in the competition.

American Flags Across the USA: Images of an American Icon by Bike

American Flags Across the USA by Bike

Two cyclists on a tandem, Eric and Devon, are riding across the USA from the Washington, D.C. area to Washington State for 70 days starting on the Memorial Day weekend, 2013.  Additional riders, initially Mimi, Ken, David H. and David C., are joining Eric and Devon for the first few weeks of the ride.
Acknowledging the place in American history and culture of the American Flag, an American Icon, riders will be posting photos of the stars and stripes encountered along the way.  See photos and blog postings at American Flags Across the USA by Bike www.Americanflagsbybike.blogspot.com

Northwest by bike--the route

The total trip is about 4000 miles. We'll spend 70 days on the road and about 62 days riding. Unless we get ambitious and ride farther and faster or grow weary and go slower...
